Book Review: People Might Hear You

Orphaned at a young age, Frances lives with her poor aunt in a tiny apartment. When her aunt marries Mr. Tyrell, a man Frances has never met before, she believes he will turn their lives around. Although Frances has to leave her school to live with the Tyrell’s, she believes Mr. Tyrell’s three daughters will become close friends of hers.

When Frances first arrives at her new home, she is surprised at the cold, silent atmosphere of the house, and by its tight security. Windows are nailed shut and cannot be opened without an alarm being triggered. There is a concrete fence around the entire house. The house is stocked with enough food to last 20 years. No-one answers the door when Mr. Tyrell is out. The raising of a voice results in a scolding of “People might hear you!” No-one is allowed out of the house without Mr. Tyrell’s accompaniment. The daughters have never met anybody outside of the family and the temple group to which they belong. The days are occupied by a mixture of housework and the study of their religion. The family lives for their religion, cut off from the rest of man-kind so they cannot be contaminated by the sins of others.

Frances tries to conform but cannot help wondering why the religion’s members are the only ones worth saving when the war comes. She finds separation from the outside world difficult and wants to be welcomed enough into the religion to be able to recommend her friends to join it.
Firstly, the ending was a huge disappointment for me. I had so many unanswered questions; the author Robin Klein should have written a sequel. The ending really spoiled the book for me.

I first read this book at age eight and had absolutely no idea of the darkness behind it. In fact, until I read a review on it when I was 15, I was clueless to its mentions of religious cults, oppression and animal cruelty. Although many reviewers have decided that the book is not suitable for young people, I disagree. When I was younger, I really thought this book was about an abnormal family with an over-protective dad. The acknowledgements to the chilling themes explored in this book went way over my head. Even now, I do not understand the complexity of the manipulation and intimidation this book was written about. However, now that I have some idea of these black motifs, I am going to read this book from an entirely different perspective. I believe this book is suitable for both children and adults.

HSC Results

HSC results are out and I hope you all got the results you need. No? Well you still have time to change your Uni preferences. Changes for main round offers are open until 5 January 2005.

Nervous about starting uni? Not sure how to pack your stuff? Worried that your first day will be kindy all over again? Uni Australia has some great advice from other students about how to survive.

Book Review: Looking for Alibrandi

Looking For Alibrandi

Josephine Alibrandi is a third generation Italian Australian. She is the Vice-Captain of a school in Sydney, where she is completing year 12. Josie often gets called “wog” and “ethic”, which anger her into performing stupid actions.

For the first 16 years of her life, Josie grew up without her father. When he arrives at her Nonna’s house one day, she is shocked and outraged. Although it takes her a long time to forgive him for abandoning her and her mother, Josie eventually becomes close to him.
When Josie realises her friends aren’t influencing her in a good way, she begins to not care what they think. A greater, better influence on her is her crush, John Barton, whose suicide takes a huge emotional toll on her.

This is a book on Josie’s reflection of herself in her final year of high school. She ultimately learns to have pride in her heritage and to not take her life for granted.

Looking for Alibrandi is a novel written for girls aged 12 and above. It answers many questions teenagers are forced to wonder, mostly relating to what life is about.

Reviews were particularly impressed by how genuine the character’s feelings were. They also liked how Josie’s problems are universal for teenagers. She is faced with family conflictions, the pressure to do well at school from her family, the pressure to not care about school from her friends, the pressure to be an innocent teenager by her teachers, the pressure to choose a career and the pressure to grow up, while still being treated like a child occasionally.

This book was made into a movie in 2000. It was filmed in Bondi, NSW.

I really enjoyed this book. It helped me to understand how proud we should be to be unique.

Book Review: Does my head look big in this?

Amal Mohamed Abdel-Hakim is a sixteen year-old Australian-Palestinian-Muslim girl living in Melbourne. Amal is Muslim and at the start of the novel, she makes the decision to start wearing the hijab “full-time”. Luckily, her friends treat her same as always. Amal is in Year 11. She finds herself constantly stressed as a result of schoolwork and helping her friends with their problems.

Throughout the book, Amal falls in love with Adam. He tries to kiss her at his birthday party but she follows her religion and heart and stops him. Amal is generally a friendly person but her hot temper and her defensive tone when someone mentions her religion lead her to have several small fights.

Amal struggles to understand other people’s views. This can be seen when her friend Leila runs away after being set up for marriage by her mother. In the end, Amal realises that the different opinions of the people she knows are what shape her now and in the future.

Many online reviews have been written by Muslims. They all found themselves able to empathise with Amal’s struggle over whether to wear the hijab or not. They also like the authenticity of this book.

However, the non-Muslims who wrote reviews seemed to disbelieve the insults Amal receives.
The author of this book, Randa Abdel-Fattah has written several books for teenagers, including Where the streets had a name. She is also a lawyer.

I thought this was a well-written book. I recommend it to young teenagers because I thought the language was a little too simple for adolescents.

Book Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the seventh and final book in the “Harry Potter” series written by JK Rowling. When Harry Potter turns seventeen, the protection he has against Voldemort at his uncle’s house will break, so he flees to the Burrow (his friend Ron’s house) before his birthday. Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione realise that since Dumbledore’s death, Voldemort has been rising to power and gaining support. They decide to not return to their school for their final year, instead they plan to find and destroy Voldemort’s five remaining horcruxes-objects he has put part of his soul into so that if he is killed, he survives; basically he is immortal until the horcruxes are destroyed. Although they are constantly hunted by Death Eaters Harry, Ron and Hermione manage to destroy all of the horcruxes. Towards the conclusion of the book, there is a huge battle at Hogwarts between good and evil. Many esteemed characters die but eventually the good side prevails.

The last chapter in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is set 19 years later. Some readers thought this was an unnecessary addition to the book but I thought it was a great way to tie up any loose ends. The majority of Harry Potter fans thought that this book was a perfect ending to a great series. I think one of the reasons why the series is so popular is because the books appeal to both genders and to children and adults. Harry Potter has become the standard to which other books are compared.

Joanne Kathleen Rowling wrote under the pseudonym “J K Rowling” so she could attract a wider audience to her books. She decided that if she originally told readers that she was female, some males would be turned off her books.

I think Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a fantastic ending to a fabulous series. I recommend reading not only this book but every book in the “Harry Potter” series, as well as other books by JK Rowling (e.g. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through The Ages, The Tales of Beedle the Bard).

Book Review: The Alchemyst

The Alchemyst is a contemporary fantasy novel by Michael Scott that begins in San Francisco. Teenage twins Sophie and Josh Newman are living with their aunt during their holidays while their parents are on an archaeological dig. Their lives are changed forever when a sinister man (who is the famous magician Dr. John Dee) shows up at the bookstore where Josh is working. Sophie and Josh witness the owner of the store, who they believe to be Nick Fleming, have a fight with Dee - using magic. Although the man gets away with a certain book, in an attempt to stop him escaping Josh manages to tear out its last few pages.

Nick Fleming reveals himself to be Nicholas Flamel, the immortal French alchemist. He and his immortal wife Perenelle were given the task of guarding “The Book of Abraham”, a collection of powerful spells that is now in Dee’s hands. When used for evil, this book has the power to end humanity. Deciding that the twins aren’t safe because Dee knows of them, Flamel takes them with him as he sets out to get the book back.

The Alchemyst is the first book in the series “The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel”. So far, four other books in this series have been published. The sixth book, The Enchantress, will be released in 2012.

There seems to be a fairly even mix of people who loved this book and people who hated it. As Michael Scott wove many mythical creatures and legends into the book, I think that you should only read it if you are interested in fantasy.

I love this book. The way it easily flows from modern times to prehistoric times, from cities in America to cities in Europe, and from Sophie’s perspective to Josh’s demonstrates how well it was written. I recommend this book to anyone, male or female, who is interested in fantasy.

Book Review - 6 by Karen Tayleur

6 is a thrilling novel by Karen Tayleur. The name of this book has been derived from the six characters that make it up, all of them in their final year of high school. Although it is primarily told from the perspective of Sarah Lum, it occasionally changes to the viewpoint of one of the other major characters. The blurb mentions that on the night of the school formal there is one car, six passengers and five seatbelts. However, apart from in the prologue and the first chapter of 6, there is no reference to the car. Tayleur entwined another story line through the novel that made the readers almost forget about the accident.

One problem readers had with the book was that when text messages were written out, the short-hand used was very extreme, and too complicated to read. Readers also deemed the “Year 11 Year Book” at the beginning of the book unnecessary as the characters were developed very well on their own. However, the majority or readers were impressed by this novel. They described the book as being very clever and well-written. The ending is very impressive, also. Many readers commented on the fact that Tayleur appeared to understand how teenagers would feel about certain issues.

Karen Tayleur, who is both an author and editor, has written numerous books. She is inspired by the people around her. Her series David Mortimore Baxter began when she overheard someone say, “So, here’s the thing” in a supermarket aisle. The person left before Tayleur could hear what the thing was so she went home and began writing a book based on “So, here’s the thing”.
This book combines the adolescent experiences of love, cars and alcohol with a fatal accident to create a novel full of suspense. Her thoughts and observations on teenage behaviour and the way teenagers think are incredible.

Book Review: Glimmer Glass

Glimmerglass is a novel written by Jenna Black. The book focuses on reality and a magical world called Fearie.

The story is about a teenage girl called Dana Hathaway. Her father left her mother when she was born, and her mother is an alcoholic. They have to keep moving from town to town to ‘get away from her father’ since her mother believes he is after Dana. Dana’s mother has a habit of embarrassing Dana by being drunk all the time so one day Dana decides to leave home to find her father. She then ends up at a place called Avalon, which is the only place where Earth and the world of Fearie connect. She then finds out she is a being called a Faeriewalker, which is a person who can freely travel between both worlds. She is then thrown into a life of magical politics, magic, and different types of relationships she’s never had before. With all these things happening around her she finds it hard to trust even the people around her.

The audience intended for this book would be teenage girls (13+), since they would find themselves somewhat similar to Dana since she deals with relationships in family and romance. The storyline is very good and addicting and characters and places are wonderfully described.

The book is also the first in a series of two books at the moment – the second book being called Shadowspell. This book focuses on a challenge Dana faces with her Faeriewalker status and is just as brilliant as the first book.

13 Little Blue Envelopes

13 Little Blue Envelopes is a novel written by Maureen Johnson in 2005. Ginny Blackstone, a 17 year old girl, receives 13 letters from her deceased Aunt Peg. The first letter instructs Ginny to obtain a passport and book a one-way plane ticket to London. She is only allowed to open the next letter once she has reached the location or completed the task of the previous one. Along the way, Ginny must also follow a set of rules compiled by her aunt. They are as follows:

• You may only bring what fits in your backpack.
• You may not bring any kind of foreign language aid or a journal.
• You cannot bring extra money.
• No electronic crutches.

Throughout her travels, Ginny meets an uncle whom she never knew she had, many of her aunt’s friends and a boy who she falls in love with. Unfortunately, Ginny’s bag gets stolen so she is unable to read the final envelope.

Reviewers have deemed this book an easy, quick read that is a great choice for teenage girls as it touché on the importance of family, love and friendship values. Readers have commented that the novel is interesting as it describes the way Ginny matures from a shy teenager to an independent young woman with an interest in the life around her. As the average age range for this book is 12-18, many readers will be going through this faze and will be able to understand the trials Ginny is faced with.

Maureen Johnson has written a sequel to this book, called The Last Little Blue Envelope.

Readers have declared that this book is just as good as the first. She has written eleven books in total.

Book Review: Princess Precious and the Peasant Girl

Princess Precious and the Peasant Girl is a children’s picture book written by Gaby Goldsack and Cathie Shuttleworth.

The book is about a young princess who is very spoilt and demands to have presents a lot. Her father –the King tells her that she is lucky to get everything she wants, unlike a peasant girl who is outside. The princess then insults the girl and heads outside to tell the girl to go away. The peasant girl then starts to leave; put the princess sees her coat and wants it. The peasant girl says it isn’t fit for a princess, but then the princess says “I wish it was mine!” Suddenly the princess becomes a peasant and is wearing the coat. The guards don’t seem to recognize her as the princess anymore and she forced to live as a peasant. The princess then soon learns about peasants and how they live. She then tells them one night, “I wish I’d been kinder.” The princess then finds herself back in the royal palace and everyone is delighted to see her again. She also had learnt a lesson about being spoilt and is never spoilt again.

The book is 20 pages long and the pictures are nicely detailed and colourful. The story has a lot of words so younger children under the age of 7 mightn’t be able to read it well. The book has a message to it, and the message was clearly shown through the pictures and text.

The author, Gaby Goldsack, has been writing children’s books since 1995. She covers all types of books, from picture ones to activity ones. She lives in a town in England, and likes to travel all over Britain for inspiration for her books. She also is an illustrator.

Book Review: A Girl, a Smock and a Simple Plan

A Girl, a Smock and a Simple Plan is a novel written by Chris Daffey that follows the life of Julian Crower through his final year of primary school, where he was voted the second most frightening sight in the playground.

The blurb of this book reads, “Julian Crower was a large child. Not large enough to be considered fat, but fat enough to be considered large. At five feet and three inches, he towered above your average sixth grader and represented the kind of shambling, slow-witted menace that no primary school could be without.” Julian is on a quest to win Jenny, the love of his life’s heart. Although, throughout the year, he encounters strange teachers and school bullies, and has terrifying moments outside the principal’s office, he never gives up on his dream to be Jenny’s girlfriend.

As this book is told through the perspective of a young boy, the language is informal and conversational. This helps the book appeal to a young audience, as it is easy to connect with it. Readers have deemed this novel hilarious and easy to read. One reader announced, “I just loved the simplicity of it, and the conversational tone.” A Girl, a Smock and a Simple Plan has received many five-star ratings.

Chris Daffey worked as a lawyer for many years before pursuing his interest in writing. This is his first book. It appears that it is basically a dramatised version of Daffey’s own grade six. When asked why he wrote the book, Daffey simply said, “Because primary school is funny.”

Chris Daffey has been able to perfectly capture the thoughts and experiences of a sixth grader. This is why A Girl, a Smock and a Simple Plan is such a hilarious, brilliant book. Read it!

Book Review: Fallen by Lauren Kate

Fallen by Lauren Kate is a story about star crossed lovers who live, love, and lose, over and over. Lucinda and Daniel try to stay away from each other, by fate continuously draws them back to each other. With the help of their friends and their enemies always on watch. Daniel and Luce find a way to live, love and be happy, and live a normal, human life. This quartet of books is aimed for those younger adults, and even some of the younger at heart romance sooks. The Fallen series consists of the book that gave it the name, Fallen, followed by Torment, Passion, and the forth book yet to be released.

My opinion of this book when I first saw the name is that it was just another of those soppy love stories that you see everywhere. But could I possibly have been MORE wrong. This wasn't just one of those love stories, this was almost as big as Twilight, I simply couldn't put it down! Definitely the kind of book I would recommend to my friends and family.

The complete opposite of your typical love triangle good vs evil battle stories, Fallen captivates the readers, drawing them into the story up until the very end.you feel as though you are part of the story, and you feel the characters emotions. Fallen is in it's own way uniquely different, unlike anything you are likely to read ever again.

Book Review: Scared to Death by Alan Gibbons

Scared to Death by Alan Gibbons is one of those stories that drags the reader back through time, to the darker times in humanity. The story follows the young Paul Rector who is living in a post Jack-The-Ripper era. He has everything, friends, a nice girlfriend, and he is doing well in school. But then "Red" comes along. Paul can't shake the thought that he knows Red, and Red knows who he is. When things start to go sour, Paul wants out, but he soon finds that he is at the mercy of the Red Man. When someone starts copying the crimes of Jack the Ripper, Red takes Paul to show him his side on London. That's when things start to get a bit creepy.

This book is for those horror lovers out there, the detail is so intense you can picture the exact events, locations, and characters, I finished it in a matter of days. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of danger in their life, the thrill seekers. Through the sequence of events we learn that Paul is just a boy, growing up and having to face his fears.

This book is unlike anything I have ever read, this coming from someone who has read about 34 books this year alone, some even twice. It's definitely a nice change from the typical boy meets girl in high school and the rumors and what not. A classic thrill which I will keep in my collection for years to come.

Tips for the Teenage Tightrope

On Monday 29 August, the Library presented another parent talk in partnership with MWLP. 'Tips for the Teenage Tightrope' focussed on strategies and ideas to help adults with teens in their lives navigate this time.

Christina Ott presented to 70 parents, carers and professionals who work woth young people. The basics of the Resilience Doughnut as a tool to use with young people was outlined once more and gave the background to helping young people develop resilience.

If you missed the talk, we will add a video soon. The library also holds a wonderful collection of titles that support parents, check out the Parenting Collections at the library to find out more.

The next talk will be held in November - keep an eye on the website for details.

The Young Carers Program Team at South West Sydney, Cumberland Prospect and Central Coast have come together to organise an action packed 3 day/2 night camp for our Young Carers aged 8-13 years.

The Camp is held on Tuesday 4th October to Thursday 6th October at Outdoor Adventure Camp Wisemans Ferry. The Young Carers will have heaps of fun by relaxing, playing games and meeting new friends.

This novel is a page turner the entire length of the book, with each new chapter bringing another shell shocking surprise to the reader. This has been a favourite of mine for a long time, and the actual events I enjoy most about whatever book I read is the journey taken, not the final conclusion. And this journey is something to look back on and remember with a smile. As always, good job Meg Cabot!

Graceling - Kristin Cashore

A tale of love, war and quest to find truth, Graceling captures the SF audience quite easily with detailed descriptions of the ‘Graced’ – people who have two different coloured eyes and have a great ability to do various things. The main character Katsa has quite a good grace – the grace of killing. She is forced to be the ‘lapdog’ of her uncle (who is also king and her only guardian) and Katsa must do all of his bidding. She never liked to kill, and until she meets a unique – and also graced – man named Po, her thoughts and actions towards her uncle changes. The whole story has a mixture of action, gore and romance – suitable for most! In my opinion, it is one of the nest SF novels I have read to date, and am currently reading the sequel Fire. I’d highly recommend this to any action OR Science Fiction/Fantasy reader ANY DAY

Silverchair - Young Modern

Silverchair’s fifth studio album Young Modern is a bright and intriguing example of the bands evolution throughout the course of their fairly lengthy yet still young career. In star contrast to the band’s grungy and Nirvana- like early work which saw them burst into to global popularity in the mid-90’s, Young Modern uses upbeat melodies and simple but catchy rhythms which draws comparison to the pop-rock of the 70’s and 80’s. The album’s use of keyboards and synths see it, at times; reach the border of electro-pop. This album is the next step in the bands slow evolution to a more artistic yet somewhat poppy style which is seen to be more desirable in today’s era of rock. This album may somewhat disgruntle the bands early fans who prefer their earlier, grungier work but has and will continue to attract a new group of fans for rock trio. Stand out tracks from the album include the radio-friendly “Straight Lines”, the melodic electro-pop track “If You Keep Losing Sleep”, the old school rock number in “Mind Reader” and my personal favorite “Insomnia”.
I would recommend the album to loyal fans as it is the next step in the band’s evolving genre as well as anyone who likes upbeat pop-bordering rock n’ roll.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men tells the story of two men, George and Lennie, who travel together in search of employment. Lennie, a simple minded and most likely mentally challenged character, has the pair run out of a town called Weed for inappropriate actions towards a young lady. George, his partner helps Lennie get away and this theme of George rescuing Lennie from trouble is a reoccurring theme throughout the novel. The pair find employment at a ranch in a town called Soledad, at which they become acquainted with a range of characters. During their time at the ranch Lennie continues to put himself and Lennie at risk, for instance when Lennie gets into a scuffle with Curley, the novels main antagonist, and breaks Curley’s hand. Steinbeck’s use of language techniques and symbolism help portray levels of conflict throughout the text and are reasons as to why the novel is held with such a high literary reputation. This novel’s themes of friendship and inner struggle can be are still relevant to this day and I would recommend this novel to people of all ages. B. Bushell

Nineteen Minutes Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult tells the devastating story of seventeen year old school student Peter Houghton in her breathtaking novel "19 minutes". Through his life Peter has been subject to both physical and mental abuse from his classmates. He has few friends and when his best friend Josie leaves him in an attempt to be "cool" he goes over the edge. His rampage through the school affects not only the students but the entire town and Peter is again left feeling isolated and alone.
This novel questions everything we expect from humanity. Although I have read a number of novels written by Picoult, 19 minutes is by far her most memorable. It makes you think about your own school experience and question how well you can ever really know someone. This novel is a touching and unforgettable story, I would recommend it to anyone.

The Reaper series by Andrew Butcher was not the greatest read in the world. I was let down, bored and confused when reading this series.
The first book - The Time of the Reaper was enjoyable and will get you hooked but the following titles are disappointing. Rating = Half a star.

Review: Toy Stories

For those who enjoy a blast from the past and a reinventionof the playthings of old, this is a must watch. Top gear's James May sets about reintroducing the toys of previous generations, be it Plasticine or Mecanno, on a grand scale to inspire the young (or young at heart). The feats of engineering and imagination never cease to amaze, and bring together young anf old to achieve a single ultimate goal, such as the longest Scalextic trip ever laid, or a two story house made entirely of Lego. Those who have slight nerdish tendencies, or who simply enjoy a good laugh with some fun old toys, will definately enjoy James May's Toy Stories. Look for it in the TV section of the DVD collection at Narellan Library.

Fallen angels the new Vampires?

Meet Nora, overachieving highschool student who has recently lost her dad. Meet Patch, bad boy with a mysterious past. Sound predictable? Well to an extent it is. Obviously the good girl is going to fall for the bad boy, but this paranormal romance has enough to keep you guessing. Becca Fitzpatrick does a great job of creating a world of fallen angels and their super powered offspring and throws in enough plot twists in the first book Hush Hush that I was eager for the release of Crescendo. While the second book has a killer ending, I found it a bit too angsty at times. With that all said however I am looking forward to the third book (due sometime next year). SB

Inkheart + Inkspell Book Review

Hey guys,

I'm back again to give you my humble opinion on a couple of books I've been reading!

Recently I watched the movie "Inkheart" (based on Cornelia Funke's series) and liked it so I decided to give the book a go...

And I was pleasently surprised...I found that it was a great book with lots of adventure and fantasy and an excellent storyline. Very different from the movie though. I found the book to be more in depth than the movie and more entertaining.

Then I decided to have a go at the 2nd book in the series, Inkspell. This one was a bit slower and took a while to get into the good stuff...but I'm glad I stuck with it because it had a good ending :)

If you enjoyed the Twilight series, check this series out!

Manga Update

Hey there guys!!

It has been awhile since my last rant but here I am today going to give you awesome new anime and manga updates exclusive to Australia!!

Well first up, the final episode of FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood, both the manga and the anime, have finished with episode 64. OH SWEET HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE WHY!! DX Well all good things must come to an end, but also when there is an end, there is a new beginning. Source have confirmed that there is going to be another FullMetal Alchemist movie based on the last episode of the anime and manga series, dates have not yet been released, but make sure you keep a look out for updates on Anime News Network.

If you want to read the manga , come down to Narellen library because we currently have volumes from 1 – 20 and more will come soon.

The English dub version will come out soon, there is collection 1 from episodes 1 – 13 out in stores now!

I personally love this anime and have watched and read it since 2008, I have also cosplayed from it and gave enjoyed everything about it. Everyone from ages 10 – 70+ will defiantly enjoy this spectacular, beautiful and moving series.

For all you ‘old-school’ anime otakus out there, get ready for an announcement that its level of awesomeness is over 9000!! Yes that is right, Dragonball Z is back!! But it finished didn’t it along with Dragonball GT? Yes it did but, the awesome people of Toei animation, Fuji TV and Akira Toriyama-sensei have re-done all the episodes of Dragonball Z, re-mastered the quality, have re-done some new scenes in the show and have re-dubbed it with better quality sounding and voices! This will be like re-watching Dragionball Z but with extra footage and extra HD quality. It is like nothing you have ever seen before!! If you want to borrow Dragonball or Dragonball Z, then come to the library and check it out!! We have a few Dragonball DVD’s flouting around and a few Dragonball and Dragonball Z manga as well!

I grew up with Dragonball Z and have no gone back onto my old obsession and hearing this has made me so happy! I constantly watch, read and wear Dragonball 24/7! I even try and eat like a saiyam /shot >.>;; This anime has everything like, action, adventure, comedy, romance, thriller and some really sad and emotional bits in it too, I defiantly cried in this a few times ^^; I highly recommend it to everyone at the ages of 10-40+, everyone will defiantly find something in this that they will love and hold close to them forever!

Sydney Supernova 2010!

Hey there guys, Mary here again!
It has been awhile since my last post, but now you can listen to my awesome rant about Sydney supernova!

If any of you guys went there, please feel free to post about YOUR awesome experience about Sydnova, we’d love to hear it!
As you guys know from my previous posts that I am an anime otaku and cosplays non stop, so this would be an awesome habitat that I would go to. There was everything from anime, manga, cosplay, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Marvel and DC comics, along with anime voice actors and stars from True Blood and Star Trek! Supernova combined both the popular anime genre and the awesome Sci-fi genre together to create one of the best pop culture conventions ever! It was so awesome that it was impossible to become board in less than a minute, it was just too incredible and so much to see and do!!

The convention was segregated between the anime otakus and the Sci-fi nerds so to say, so that everyone that liked one or the other then they could be in the one place that makes them happy. I am a bit of both, am an anime and cosplay otaku and then I have that soft spot for Star Trek, so this just tickled me pink! I have been to anime conventions since 2008, and this was my first time I have ever been to Supernova and let me tell you, it was defiantly not a disappointment.
Anyways, so I went all three days to Sydnova and so I did some hardcore cosplayed all three days!
Friday I was Bulam Breifs from Dragonball Z
Saturday I was North Italy with a Hetalia group
Sunday I was Edward Elric from FullMetal Alchemist (and yes, I did have an automail hand!! > u <)
For all of you people that have been living under a rock and do not know these manga or anime, I strongly suggest coming down to the library and checking these awesome classics out!! (Except Hetalia, it is an online manga ^^; ) So all these manga and anime can be borrowed at Narellan and Camden library!
My report on Sydnova!

Friday:
So, nothing much happened that night, I arrived with my friends (stayed at a friends house that weekend cause she lives 15 minutes from the Sydney Olympic Dome) cosplaying and we got our armbands cause it would be hectic if we had to wait in line for hours the next day, and then just walked around getting familiar with the place so we didn’t get lost… and when I ment ‘we’ I mean ‘I.’ ^^;
We arrived about 8:00pm and it opened at 6:00pm, so all the hustle and bustle was gone and everyone was watching the new Initial D movie in the Madman screening room. I then heard that Vic Mignogna, the voice of the awesome Edward Elric, (Fullmetal Alchemist) , Dark Mousy, (D.N.Angel), Brolly, (DragonBall Z), Tamaki Suoh, (Ouran High School Host Club), Kurz Weber, (Full Metal Panic!), Yukito Kunisaki, (Air (TV)), Ikkaku Madarame, (Bleach), Gawl Kudo, (Generator Gawl), Fai D. Flourite, (Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle)
and Zero Kiryu, (Vampire Knight) just to name a few, who I am absolutely obsessed with, was there and we just missed him!! It was so tragic, and to make things even worse for me an Codie-sempai who absolutely adore him too and is my best friend, found out that he bid a kiss!! The kiss went for $380!! We were so shocked and so devastated that we fell to the floor in tears! (Almost as worse than a couple of Justin Beiber fangirls >.>) The funny thing was that later that weekend we met the girl that bought the kiss and become great friends with her… How ironic. Mind you that I heard he was coming to Australia in 2009 and so I have been waiting ages to see him along with Travis Willingham (Roy Mustang (FullMetal Alchemist), Cell (Dragonball Z) and Mori-sempai (Ouran High School Host Club)) and Laura Bailey (Toruh Honda (Fruits Basket), Kid Trunks (Dragonball Z), (Lust (FullMetal Alchemist)). Apparently David O’Brian, the voice actor of Gaara from Naruto was also coming but I think he cancelled last minute, which was a disappointment.
Anyways, the highlight of that night was that I had two people recognize my Bulma cosplay!! So happy! And thus the night had ended and so we departed back home.

This day was my Hetalia cosplay as North Italy, and I finally had a Germany cosplayer with me, my lovely friend Erin. We as a group had the biggest and best Hetalia group that day and literly every 2-5 minutes we were stopped and asked to take photos. I was glomped a few times by randoms that love Italy and had some phtoshots with them and other things that people wanted done like hugs and lines being said from the anime, which was constantly “PASSSTTTAAAA~~~” or “ve~,” but it was a fun!
I met up with some other friends that I cosplay with and met on devantART, survived the whole 8 hour day with half of a mini cheese pizza and water and met VIC MIGNOGNA!! He had a panel that day and so Codie-semapi and we ran to the stage area where he was at and it was filled!! But luckily it was just the seats. So anyway, as we were getting settled, Vic saw me and pointed and shouted, “Hey Italy! PASSTAAA!!!” I was so suprisewd and shocked and excited that I started to jump around like a mad Italian man screaming “PASSTTTAAAA!!!” back to him! It had made my weekend!! I was so happy and everytime he saw mw he would yell “PASSTAA!!” Anyways so that was the main events on the Saturday.

Sunday:
So Sunday was my Edward Elric cosplay and I had Codie-sempai as my Winry and we were with a FullMetal Alchemist group with people that we met Saturday and the chick that bought Vic’s kiss. We were the best FullMetal Alchemist group at the con and it continued to grow with everyone photo being taken. I also met Vic Mignogna,, Trvis Willigham and Laura Bailey, was at their panel, asked question, got stuff signed and hugged them! Twas a day to remember.

Advice if you go, bring heaps of money, it is very pricy and probably caffeinated drinks and food to survive.
Anyways so another report will be coming up in August for SMASH!!

Hi all,
I'm a new contributor to this blog and you'll be seeing more of my posts up here every week.
I love reading and pretty much read a new book each week from action and adventure to romance..I read it all! So I'll be reviewing a very varied selection of items.
At the moment I am reading "Crocodile Tears" by Anthony Horowitz. This is the 8th installment of the Alex Rider series for all those of you who are unfamiliar with it. If you haven't read any of these books, I suggest you do as they are awesome for both guys and girls!
Crocodile Tears, just like all the other Alex Rider books, captured my attention as soon as i began reading it and I haven't been able to put it down since. It's got a great storyline and is very exciting. I won't give too mucg away but it's packed with action, adventure and a few good laughs which is all that can be expected from a book about a teenage spy. Honestly, I have no negative feedback from this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading!

Great Manga Read

Hey there guys!!

As a manga fan I love reading manga and when the library brings out new manga I get all excited and read as many of the new realeases as I can.
As I was looking at the new manga while working I saw this manga called 'After School Nightmare' by Setona Mizushiro. It is an action packed, shojo fantasy and romantic manga and I highly recommend this manga to any long time manga otakus or to any one that has started getting into the anime and manga genre.
5 stars for art and story line, it is just so beautiful, but it is probably recommended for people 15 and higher because it is pretty graphic.
For people who love looking deep into things and always finding meaning in anything then this manga is definately for you. There are a lot of hidden details in this book, and for people that are young reading it, may not understand some of the meaning because it is very complex and needs to be read with an alert mind.
So if you ever get the chance to come down to the library I highly recommend you consider looking at this manga or if you cannot get it at the library then you can read it at http://www.mangafox.com/

Hey there guys!!

You should all be happy and excited because the holidays are almost here!! I think it it is one week left for most schools now.
But also it may be depressing for some, like for years 10 and 12 with exams and work experience DX I am in that boat and I am very very unhappy about doing three sets of exams this year in a short amount of time and plus; working, chores at home, homework and assignments at school TT__TT
But for these holidays I do hope you guys have stuff to do and hve fun.
The highlight of my holidays is getting together with friends, cosplaying and making new cosplay outfits.
Also down here at the library are some really fun activities for all ages, so come down to the library and enjoy yourself.
There are heaps of stuff going on for primary kids and I think some art classes for teenages...have to look into that ^^;

How To Make Your Own Cosplay Outfit

Hey there!!

Have you guess ever wanted to make an anime or sci-fi costume before for a photo day or convention before? Well I am going to show you step by step on how to make an outfit!!

I cosplay nearly every weekend in Sydney with Friends and thus making me have heaps of cosplay costumes. At the moment I have 5 costumes and are currently making about 4-7 costumes this year for anime convention and photo days (DX I wonder why I do this to myself...=www=) So I have had experience in making cosplay costumes.

Anime cosplay convention season has already taken off with the first anime convention of the year mini animania, so sad I couldn't go but instead I am going to help you make your own costume for future anime and sci-fi conventions!!

There are two ways to make a costume, the easy way and your own way::
The easy way is that you buy your own costume and have it made for you. This is easy but if you do this you cannot enter in any anime convention comps. Anyways here is what you need to do::

1. First Find a place on the Internet or find a shop (like in Sydney) that can make your costume or order it to you. I suggest http://www.cosplaymagic.com/, http://www.cosplayfu.com/, http://www.anime-oz.com/ hint:: Try not to use eBay because God only knows the condition it is in and that it is really hard to find what you are looking for and also how long it will get to you in time, also it may be dodgy and probably will leav\e put detail in the costume and look...not authentic.
2. Make sure you email them like 2-4 months in advance and make sure you tell them the date you need it by (not on the day of the convention but maybe two to three weeks in advance for alteration if needed or extra stuff for the costume) or they could take their time in sending it in. Anime at Abbotsford is in Sydney the rest of the links are from USA and get there stuff from China so this may take sometime in sending it so I suggest 2-3 months in advance to request it.
3. Measure everything out and make sure you add a few extra cm to your body measurements in case you grow and you have room to move in it. This includes::
- Bust
- Weist
- Height
- Weight
- Hip
- Foot to hip
- Hip to collar bone
- shoulder width
- Foot sze (in case you can get shoes with the costume)
- Back width
- Wrist to underarm
(orz- if I left anything out OTL;;;) Also this may be on the websites so just make sure
4. If you need a wig, most websites and eBay will have them but just do what you did for ordering the costume, order in advance and make sure you don't say on the day you need it in case you need to fix the wig or add extra stuff to it. This also includes contacts. Do not buy from eBay!! My friend cosplayed as Edward Elric (/nosebleeds/) and she got her contacts from eBay and they had a scratch in it making it very hard for her to see and it really hurt her, so make sure you go to a place that is reliable to get contacts in good condition. Also if you wanna see contacts and wigs better and in person I strongly suggest to to go to Paddy's Market opened Wednesday to Sundays at market city in Sydney, contact shop opened Wednesdays to Friday ($50) and wig shop opened Saturdays to Sunday ($50). Very good quality and very awesome and cheap as!! You will defiantly find something there for your cosplay and if you can't find the right one, get the closest one to it and just fix it up at home.
5. Go to Anime At Abbotsford if you want to get extra stuff for your cosplay like weapons, pocket watches, headbands etc but make sure if you get weapons for your cosplay make that it follows the rules at anime conventions. Also if you want to do this go in a few weeks before the convention and also you can make your own extra stuff for your cosplay. I am making my own automail arm for Edward Elric for Sydney Supernova and let me tell you. if I started making it last year and it is not even done yet but I will have plenty of time to finish it because I started early (mind you it is only the hand I am making cause you won't be able to see the rest of it under my jacket X3) Also you can find Tutorials on YouTube and other websites, just google it!!
For more information on what is allowed at anime conventions just go to the anime con's website and look at the FAQ page or rule page.
Okay, I think that is it for the 'Easy way.' (phew...my hard hurts now TTwTT)

Your Own way is probably the most rewarding thing you will ever do!! You will develop new sweing skills and it is your own so you will be able to enter in anime convention comps and it will look authentic too. You can always pick out differed material to make it look really pretty and add extra awesome thing sto the costume too.
1. Go to Spotlight or Lincraft and start getting your material and patterns probably 4 months in advance (if you are busy with school or work) so you have time making it. Have a reference picture with you and look for the most closest pattern for your outfit, remember you can always alter it and also you can buy patterns off the Internet or ask someone you know that has a pattern you can borrow. When picking a pattern get one size bigger for movement and growth, if you are still growing...not like me TTwTT
2. Get everything there in one go like buttons, ribbons, thread, needles, pins, scissors or whatever you need for your costume. It helps to make a list.
2. GET A SPOTLIGHT MEMBERSHIP CARD!!!
3. Material wise, it depends on what you are making and how long you can stay in hot clothes. I suggest if making jackets of pants, use cotton drill, capes would be also cotton drill, cootton or that fuzzy material (forgot the name DX;; OTL Fail wale). Also if you want to make your costume really pretty, instead of using yellow lining for you costume for exaple, use gold, same goes for gey use silver and maybe get a pretty pattern on you material if your charcter would wear it.
Hint:: If making for example a costume that is thin clothed use poplin, make sure you get cotton and make an under shirt or skirt so it isn't see through.
Hint:: If you are making a costume that has a stiff collar of pockets or whatever get iron on interfacing. Most costume will have this so make sure you get some in case.
Hint:: If your costume does not have cotton drill or whatever look at the refrence picture and get a material that looks like it and ask for help or suggestions from staff.
4. It is probably wise to ask a friend or parent to come with you that knows their material and what patterns to get and what to use and etc. Asking for help at spotlight or lincraft is also a good idea too.
5. I also strongly suggest getting a parent, grandparent or friend to help you sew so it gets done faster and that if you are not a really good sewer then you will have someone to help you.
6. Once you get all your material and what have you start cutting patterns out and pinning the costume together then start sewing.
Hint:: If you do not have an overlocker use the stich that is zig-zag works the same.
7. Again go to Paddy's market to get a wig and contacts or what ever extra thing you need from there or Anime at Abbtsford.
(Hope I didn't leave anything out ^^;;;) GOOD LUCK!!

Also when your costume arrives or when you finish making your costume try everything on including wigs, contacts and accessories, make up to see your resolts.

GUESS WHAT!! Cosplay season for 2010 has arrived with it's first anime convention ANIMANIA 2010!!
It is on the 20th of March at the Australia Technology Park Sydney!!

I may be going (that is I have money and finish sewing up my new costume I am almost done making ^^;; OTL) as again North Italy in his military of chibi maid outfit ... or if I have time Ritsuka from Loveless (again if I finish making the costume in time) so make sure you get your tickets early!! I strongly siggest to pre-order your tickets because it is way cheaper and you do not have to wait in a very long line to get in the convention. (Trust me I know TT^TT never making taht mistake again) Also for some good advise for first time cosplayers make sure you get there early and bring lunch and extra money cause it is very pricy (Again trust me on this cause I spend $200 at animania a few years agao ^^;; /is shot/) Also make sure you ahve afriend or group to cosplay with cause it is extra fun to be with other poeple cosplaying with you and BRING A CAMERA!!

Hey there guys!

Have you ever wanted to go to a Japanese festival before, do you love Japanese culture and want to learn more about it? Well the Natsu Matsuri, aka Summer festival, is here for 2010!!

The Natsu Matsuri is held every year in Sydney in February to celebrate the Japanese culture and summer!

This year it is held on the 6th of February at Palm cove, Sydney Darling Harbour near IMAX, starts at 12:00 - 20:00 and is for free!!

For all anime otakus out there (including me!! X3) there will be a cosplay parade where cosplayers walk the streets of Sydney in awesome cosplay and costumes preforming just for you!! I will be attending the cosplay parade as North Italy in his military uniform from Axis Powers Hetalia so make sure you come say "HI!!" or "CIAO!"

Hi peoples-how are you?
We have recently had research skills sessions at the Library and I wanted to pass on these tips from our Manager Kathryn when you're trying to find info in the world of google-here we go..

Not sure what word to use or want to maximise your results?
Try this symbol ~ (at the top left of your keyboard)
For eg. ~ run (will also look for runners,running,marathon)
~volunteer (will also look for volunteering,non-profit,community service,internship)
What does it do? It searches the google index for words/concepts that are similar! Kind of like a giant thesaurus.

Truncating searches.
I'm sure many of you already know this one, but if not, its great as it finishes the word for you. Did you know it also works in the middle of the sentence? (Great for the spelling impaired)
For eg. bicycl*
bicycle,bicycles,bicycling,bicyclists

Need a particular file type?
Try the following
thucydides + "letype:pdf
doc, ppt, xls...
Why would you want to do this? A lot of information on the net isn't published as a web page, this means that when google tries to find it , it can't search those key terms. By specifying a file type you can find things.

Need something specific?
Try
"fairy tales"+ prince-dragons (fairytales that contain princes but no dragons)
The advanced search function can also be used to the same effect.

Google Timeline
Go to google and type in Queen Elizabeth view:timeline
Be amazed!! Scroll the timeline up and down to pick different historical periods. This is a fantastic tool if you are unsure of dates etc.

Other cool things on google
Google is a calculator: Just type in the sum and google will give you the answer
Google is a dictionary: Just type in the word with define in front of it eg. Define:plasma
Google site specific searching: Wnat to get your information from a specific site?Try this site: smh.com.au

Hello from me -Niki, the temporary-Mon and Tues -youth Librarian.
There are many things about to happen at the Library and I've got to tell you and you've got to come.
First up-this Saturday (July 18th) Llana will be taking the research skills workshop at Narellan-quick hurry quick book and be rescued from the stress of trying to find exam stuff at the Library.

Then for 15-18year olds and for GenX (their parents) a 3 part series on 'Budge-it'-money talks. We're in a financial crisis, you're wanting to make money and preferably keep it-how do you go about it? Here's the info:

Ancient History Lecture notes 2009

Here are some brief notes from the Ancient History Lecture presented by Bruce Dennett.To get started here are some outstanding texts on the Cities of Vesuvius that can really help you along:

*Cities of Vesuvius- Michael GrantAny publications by Pam Bradley, Kate Cameron or Jenny Lawless.
For each concept and response remember to refer to both cities (Pompeii and Herculaneum) unless it is specifically stated to only refer to one city.
Do not fully rely on your sources for your answers, you must remember to critically engage and examine the source from its original context. It can be very easy to refer to it from todays context but this will result in an inaccurate analysis.
An example of this is a quote from Jacinta Hawkes (an expert on the Stonehenge)
"Every generation gets the Stonehenge it wants and the Stonehenge it deserves"
Which essentially means that the historical remnants are open to interpretation to each generation depending on the context of that generation.
This is why the source needs to be analysed from the original context.
Remember that Pompeii and Herculaneum DO NOT give us an insight into Ancient Rome.To say this would be a dramatic over generalisation. An example of this can be made with Pompeii and Herculaneum, they were closest only in Geography in any other sense they were a mass of difference. Remember that Pompeii was a port city it was rich in ethnic and cultural diversity (Multicultural) and had an extensive trade network.

The first excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum were not for Archealogical purposes. They were purely treasure hunts.
Mussolini had one purpose to dig the cities this was to show the world that in ancient times the Roman Empire had ruled and could once again.

GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXT:
Pompeii and Herculaneum were very fertile and prosperous, up to 3 major cereal crops (wheat, barley etc) were harvested each year.
The cities also supported a major wool industry.Pompeii covered and area of about 66 hectares of which only 2/3 has been excavated.Herculaneum was about 12 hectares in size but only a fraction has ever been excavated.Be sure not to draw the same conclusions from the two cities they were very different- let the marker know you understand this! Dont be afraid to use your vocabulary for example:"Pompeii and Herculaneum were contrasting cities this is shown...."Learn the details of one house from each of the cities. Markers will want the particulars of the house. Remember that pompeii has an intergration of residential, commercial and industrial bulidings.An important point to remember is that if you are going to argue a point argue it from an autoritve source, this is known as information literacy and is standard across all subjects.A good name to mention is Andrew Wallace-Hadrill he is in charge of the dig. Do some research on him and his views particularly the 2004 60 minutes interview.Also try Sarah Bissell- be careful though- recognise the facts and not the assumptions.Bissell has dug 139 skeletons from Herculaneum."Absence of evidence does not mean evidence of absence"Up until 10 years ago it was believed that no one had died in Herculaneum, furthur excavation has disproved this theory.Also there is no wheel ruts found on the roads in Herculaneum, in saying this the beach leading from the ocean to herculaneum is very steep, but this is the only part that has been excavated.It is not a silly assumption to believe that donkeys were used to move cargo up the steepest part of the hill. It is possible that furthur excavations MAY reveal evidence of wheel ruts.

Are you having trouble with assignments?, don't know how to start them or maybe even don't get the whole thing?

Don't worry, you're not alone. If you are like that and your teacher can't help you or your parents don't get it either, why not head to your local library, dont be afraid to ask questions or to seek some help, approach the staff with confidence and they will be glad to help.

How do I know this? Is that a question in your head?

If it is:
I am a student in year 10 at Elderslie High School doing work experience at Narellan Library. I currently have a geography assignment from hell. Noone gets it in my family and I have asked a couple of teachers at school to help me but they won't and to add something else, if i don't complete it I get an N Award which means I fail my school certificate.

I was stuck, big time.

I asked a librarian for some help and just like that I got all of this information about it that has helped alot, if I didn't ask I would still be sitting at home doing nothing about it due to the fact I just didn't understand it.

Hi guys, as there's been a heap of interest in the Twilight books we want to know what else you are reading in the same vein:) Let us know what else you are enjoying that we haven't got on the shelves.

We have the Vampire Beach series and the first book of Vampire Academy (with the next 2 books on order and coming soon hopefully), the House of Night series among others but with the demand, we need to buy some other series. So let us know what else you've read or heard about that you'd recommend we buy.

well 2009 is well and truly underway and here at the library we are back in the swing of things! HSC LOCKIN

I'm sure you don't need reminding but its HSC study time! With the exams starting in three weeks we have some good news for HSC stdents.

Tuesday 14 October at 5pm, we are shutting Narellan library to the general public and opening it exclusively for HSC students. Thats not all! We are providing English tutors free of charge! All you need to bring is your notes, study materials and maybe some money for pizza!

If you are using the library for study we have set aside some places for quiet study and if you're at Narellan we have free private study rooms. There's even WIFI access if you want to BYO laptop.

Since we know its hard to keep your brain going, the library will also be providing free snacks for students.

Free BBQ and postcard launch

Sexual Health Week

Camden Council was successful in obtaining a $1000 grant to assist in Sexual Health Week activities for 15-21 September. A series of 3 afternoon graphic design workshops will be facilitated by Camden Creative Studios in conjunction with local young people who access Camden Youth Café, Camden Council Community & Library Services, along with other local youth services such as Camden Area Youth Services and Traxside Youth Health Service. These workshops will give young people from marginalised backgrounds the opportunity to design and create two postcard designs that address the issues of healthy sexual relationships including alcohol and other drugs, negotiating consent, violence and sexual diversity. The workshops will commence on Tuesday 2nd September and conclude on Thursday 4th September and run from 3:30pm-6pm. This will allow for professional printing to be commenced, with final products being launched on Friday 19th September during Sexual Health Week.

Youth Week is coming!!

Alright, Youth Week is almost here and I'm sure you are all wondering what we are doing, well, its festival time!! We get to hang out at the Underground Frequencies Music Festival on April 5th at Kirham Park! make sure you stop by the Library tent and check out our songwriting workshop...more on that later.

Also during Youth Week we will be having Pizza and Pages at Camden Library. This is your chance to find out what new books the library has, eat pizza and let me know what stuff you'd like to see in the library in the coming months.

Need a Job?

Do you need a job, but don't know where to start? Whether you've left school, are thinking about it or just want something to do of an afternoon and want to find out how to get cash - you should enrol in our new Jumpstart program.

Jumpstart is for 15 - 24 Year Olds and teaches communications skills, how to make your resume look schmick and how to use the computer to find jobs.
You even get a Tafe Statement of Attainment at the end of it (which looks really good in the new resume!).

The class runs for 8 weeks and starts on Feb 20th and only goes for from 4-6, so you can still have a life.

Who says libraries are quiet?

Last Friday (1st Feb) we held EffectU8 in the youth cafe as a goodbye to holidays and hello to another term of school.

Thanks to the bands, Serenity, Inflight Entertainment, The Lawn Mowers and Happy Camera (at left) for playing. Obviously without you the night would consist of alot of people moshing to air.

Also, big thanks to our sponsors for donating prizes to EffectU8 Reading (ACE Music, AES Library Supplies, Today FM, Powerhouse Museum, National Maritime Museum).

For those that missed out, next time you'll have to get in quick and read something for EffectU8 Reading and get a free ticket. Jodie has some pics on the youth cafe myspace page.

If you missed out, remember we have an open mic night the last Thursday of the month from 4-6pm....so come and sing, dance, play, recite some poetry.......choice is yours.

Cartoon Dave is my new favourite TV star!

Ok. This is a very dorky statement, but after yesterdays workshops its true. Not only did he teach us that the secret to cartooning is exaggeration and caricuture, the guy is just awesome!

I've asked Dave to come back from now untill the Apocolypse (which he has agreed to), so if you missed him this time he'll be back again soon. Maybe next time you can have the cartoon treatment like Dylan! (at left).

We still have our spending spree to Macarthur Square next Monday, if you want to come, call us on 4645 5039. Buy what YOU want for the library.

Are you a guitar hero?

Welcome to 2008 everyone!
These school holidays are kicking off with a few rounds of Guitar Hero. We supply the food, you supply the moves!! So come and much on some pizza and pit yourself against other guitar greats. Tuesday 8th Jaunuary, 1-2pm Narellan Library.

For those into scrapbooking, we have calendar creations, come and get organised for 2008 with your own funky calendar - Camden Library Thursday 10 Jan. 2-4pm

Disney channels own cartoon guru - Cartoon Dave Hackett is joining us on Wednesday 16 Jan from 12-1pm and Narellan, so if you've ever wanted to learn how to draw superheroes (or anything else), come along.

And lastly so that you cvan have your say as what the library stocks, we are going to Macarthur Sq. on Monday 21st January to hit the shops.

Don't forget that these holidays, we have effectU8 reading. You read books we give you prizes! How good is that! Everyone that joins is eligible for a free ticket to the EffecU8 concert, being held on February 1st. There are 4 great bands playing and if you join the reading club, you get to come for free!

Remember the library is also the pick up point for Beach Bus tix, so if you want to escape the heat and catch some waves, you can can grab a bus ticket to Wollongong. (Bring your parents when you pick up the ticket as they have to sign a form).

Music Video Launch!!

ATTENTION! ATTENTION!! ROCK IN LIBRARY!!

In a library first we will be hosting Inflight Entertainment's Music Video Launch on November 29th@ Camden Youth Cafe.

During July we made a music video for the guy's song "Lime and Lace" and its finally finished!!! We are going to launch the video as part of our November Acoustic Open Mic night - so come down from 4pm for some free food and music. Inflight Entertainment will perform an acoustic session, we'll show the video and then carry on with our open mic, so bring your instruments, your poetry, your dance shoes.....whatever!!

Write better songs and poetry!

Greetings all,
The next couple of months are going to be pretty busy for youth library services in Camden as we have an action packed holiday program planned. I’m very excited about the Songwriting workshop which is being run by Stephen Kiely from Songs Alive.Stephen is a professional song writer and will be teaching song writing techniques, how to write lyrics and music and will even critique stuff you’ve already written. Numbers are limited so make sure you book. BYO Instrument. (October 10 - $5.50)

Josh Dubrau (poet, writer and muso) will running a Poetry workshop for everyone that wants to get their thoughts on paper. Once you’ve used our workshops to become a master wordsmith, come along to our poetry slam / open mic night. Rappers and Urban poets also welcome! (October 4 - FREE)

For everyone that loves a good spookfest, the library will once again be hosting a
LIBRARY LOCK-IN, that’s right, singstar, pizza and horror stories, combined with the chance to put on your favourite creepy costume. Details aren’t confirmed, but there may be prizes for best dressed on the night!

Well that may not be quite true....but if your parents have no idea about sites like MySpace, think a blog is something that sticks in your throat and can't see the use of having their photos any where but in a photo album...you need to send them to "MY TEENS ON THE NET......NOW WHAT?"
This one and a half hour workshop will teach parents of teenagers about social networking technologies...and maybe get them off your back.

Goths, Pizza and weird alien creatures

Quick reminder that Pizza and Pages is on next week (28th August)
This week I will be reading "The astonishing adventures of fan boy and goth girl" by Barry Lyga. I have been wanted to read this for ages as its about a couple of misfits with a love of comics.......I'm also going to read "An abundance of Katherines" by John Green which has won masses of awards in the States.
CBC Winners
I'll bring along some of this years Childrens Book Award Winners (if they haven't all been borrowed this week). I am very excited that Shaun Tan's "The Arrival" won picture book of the year, this is the story that proves you are never too old for a picture book as this one is definately not for little kids. The illustrations are all in sepia tomes and look like bizare aliens.

Margo Lanagan's "Red Spikes" won the older reader category, I haven't gotten around to reading this yet; if you have, come along next Tuesday and tell me what you think.
