One person who rose to fame with the help of YouTube is Caspar Lee. Caspar first began making YouTube videos at the age of 16 from his bedroom, in the South African town Knysna, and soon enough captured the world’s attention. Caspar’s videos (and movies) feature quirky humour, loads of pranks, ridiculous challenges concocted by the man himself (i.e. ‘The Brain Freeze Challenge’) and his (now ex) roommate Joe Sugg (a fellow YouTuber).

In May 2016 Caspar published his first ever book - a self-titled autobiography which he co-wrote with his mum, Emily Riordan Lee. In this original-format autobiography Emily recounts Caspar’s childhood from being born in London to moving to South Africa and it is filled with crazy (real) adventures from encounters with wild elephants and witchdoctors to other dangers the Lee’s experienced while living in South Africa. Emily doesn’t downplay the family’s financial troubles that forced them to move to Africa nor does she hold back from letting readers in on Caspar’s struggle growing up with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Tourette Syndrome and how he’s still working to conquer these illnesses today.

Alongside the text and Caspar’s adorable childhood photos, Caspar highlights parts of the text that he finds either happy, sad or embarrassing and makes playful interjections, reflecting Caspar’s quirky humour and spin that fans have come to know and love.

The book serves as a reminder to fans that before becoming a YouTube superstar, Caspar lived a (fairly) normal life, dealing with financial issues and other burdens, and that he is just like you and I, however, his hard work and drive set him apart and allowed him to rise to YouTube stardom. Follow Caspar on his inspiring journey to international YouTube success in this must-read book, filled with humour, crazy adventures, fun, hard work and unexpected thrills.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">If you a live under a rock, Netflix recently released an
original series called ‘13 Reasons Why’
that was produced by Selena Gomez. What most people don’t know, however, is
that the series is based on a book by Jay Asher called (yep, you guessed it!) ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’. Here is 13
Reasons Why YOU need to read the book ‘Thirteen
Reasons Why’:

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">The story of Hannah Baker is as compelling as it is sad. ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ follows Clay Jensen as he learns the story of Hannah Baker and why she chose to end her life.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ explores the idea of teen suicide and the impact that a suicide has on people. Hannah Baker’s suicide shook the small town in which she lived.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Hannah Baker’s story is relevant. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for 10-24 year olds. M<span style="font-family: "calibri";">ore teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease <span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; font-weight: normal;">combined<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">.<span style="font-family: "calibri";"> In a society where teen suicide has become the ‘norm’ and 5% of the world’s population suffers from depression (approximately 350 million people) Hannah Baker’s story is very relevant. (All statistics have been researched and gathered from jasonfoundation.com and healthline.com)

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ is confronting in the best possible way. Not only does Jay Asher explore teen suicide in, he tackles themes such as rape culture and sexual harassment among many other things. Throughout the book Hannah is sexually objectified, harassed and assaulted. The book brings to light that rape is a silent epidemic and highlights the path that leads from bullying to sexual harassment to sexual violence. Read more on how Asher tackled rape culture in ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ and through the Netflix series here.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Asher seeks to teach readers a lesson through the character of Hannah Baker. Asher presents the idea of ‘snowballing’, the idea that everything, no matter how little or insignificant, adds up in the end.
The events that take place in the book all occur within one night whereas in the Netflix series Clay’s story of how he learnt why Hannah killed herself takes place over days, maybe even weeks. There are many other differences between the book and Netflix series. The book is, almost, a completely different story to Selena Gomez’s ‘13 Reasons Why’.

Reading the book gave me further understanding of Clay’s character and his emotions, gain a deeper comprehension of why Hannah decided to end her life and what her life was like before she committed suicide.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">If you are a teen like me, then you will be able to identify (despite the fact that ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ is set in the U.S.) with the sometimes oppressive culture of high school that Hannah experiences. Upon her arrival at Liberty High School, Hannah was subject to sexual objectification and harassment, students spread false rumours about her, she was oppressed by her peers, something that is common in today’s society, and even oppressed by her guidance counsellor, Mr Porter. I was able to identify with Hannah’s struggle to fit in and escape the oppressive culture of High School.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">If I haven’t convinced you to read the book then at least read this amazing novel for its wonderful characters. Although ‘Thirteen Reason Why’ story and plot are compelling, moving and even ground breaking, its Asher’s carefully and terrifically crafted characters that truly make the book. Asher utilises complex archetypes like ‘The Regular Guy’ (Clay Jensen), ‘The Saint’ (Courtney Crimson) and ‘The Bad Boy’ (Justin Foley and Bryce Walker) to create a sense of familiarity for us readers and make us sympathetic to the story.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Asher has created a true page turner, with its unique and intriguing format – a chapter for each of the 13 tapes Clay listens to.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Much like point number 9 – a story can have a brilliant plot but it’s whether the book has an author that is capable in portraying it in such a way that leaves a reader wanting more. A brilliant plot? Yes! Characters that readers can relate to? Yes! ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ ticks all the boxes to a good book. With a poetic and emphatic style, Asher perfectly captured Hannah’s story in such a way that leaves readers on the edge of their seat wanting more. I know I certainly did.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">Asher was able to capture many of today’s teens experiences, through a clear lens. In a society where 1 in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault (statistic taken from <span style="color: blue; font-family: "calibri";">https://www.rainn.org/statistics/children-and-teens<span style="font-family: "calibri";">), Hannah Baker’s story is not only relatable for many but it vocalises issues today’s teens are faced with. For me, reading ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ was very eye-opening. Before reading ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ I was unaware of such alarming statistics and what sort of situations that people my age and younger are forced to face.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Whether you like it or not, reading ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ will change your life. It has opened my eyes to many issues that today’s society has and it has made me more aware of what is going on around me and what is happening in other people’s lives. ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ is a game-changing novel that tackles confronting yet important subjects in the best way possible, I cannot argue that enough.

Two teenagers, Dave and Julia, were adamant about not being
‘clichéd’ teenagers once they entered high school, so they compiled a list. The
Nevers list, as it was named, consisted of multiple clichéd things they must
never do upon entering high school. Like never dying your hair a colour of the
rainbow and never attending or throwing a high school party.

However, Dave had
secretly broken rule number 8, ‘Never pine silently after someone for the
entirety of high school’. Since longer than he can remember he had always had a
crush on Julia. He thought of her as beautiful and wild, but he couldn’t tell
her his feelings in fear of jeopardising the list but, if the feelings were
reciprocated they’d break rule number 10 ‘Never date your best friend’!

should do all the things on the Nevers list.
Dave, having already secretly broken a never, was ecstatic about the
idea. So they dyed their hair obnoxious colours of the rainbow (Julia a bright
pink and Dave an oddly disturbing shade of green), attended rowdy parties
thrown by the rich kids and attempted to become Prom King and Queen. Julia also
tried to hook up with the awkward math teacher by reciting terrible math puns at
a poetry hearing he attends and following him into the men’s bathroom at a restaurant.
In the end her attempts at seduction had always failed.

SCID is ‘just as famous as it is rare’ and it basically means that Maddy is not allowed to leave her house due to the complications the outside world can cause, she is trapped in her own (metaphorical) bubble. Maddy is stuck living the same dull routine day in and day out, hourly check-ups from the nurse and playing Phonetic Scrabble at night with her mother.

This all changes when a family moves into the house next door. Maddy begins disobeying the rules that were carefully laid out to protect her health and against all odds, and despite the dangers, she falls for the glorious boy-next-door archetype that is Olly. Maddy finds herself talking to Olly through any means of communication possible; Instant Messaging, Emails, and even messages written in marker on the window. Follow the story of Olly and Maddy as it unfolds through diary entries and vignettes, also featuring illustrations by Yoon’s husband, David.

If you loved Augustus and Hazel (do I even need to mention what book these characters are from?) or Eleanor and Park then I can guarantee you that you WILL love ‘Everything, Everything’ as much as I did!
In July 2016 it was announced that this fantastic book is being adapted into a movie, and in February this year Warner Brothers released the film’s first official trailer. The film is directed by Stella Meghie, featuring Amandla Stenberg as Maddy and the God that is Nick Robinson as Olly, it is set to be released on the 18th of May and not going to lie; I AM PUMPED.
A girl who, in a world where reincarnation is normal and expected, has no past life to speak of. When things start to go bad for Nadia very quickly, she meets Diesel who helps her escape and together they go on the run in search of answers to why she has no trace of any past life.
Filled with adventure, a forced and uneasy partnership/friendship, and twists and turns to carry you through till the end which leaves you wanting more.

This is one of the best books I’ve read and highly recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for something a bit different.
The phrase "I'll just finish this page" was said multiple times during this read.

The pace doesn't give in and makes you want to find out what happens next at every turn. Tommy Greyson is a werewolf. Though she didn't know it until she found herself headed to New Zealand to find her long lost father. After a run in with her father's family, she discovers the truth and the action starts. From her first transformation to her training and learning about her new life as a werewolf, the story never lets up.

If you like strong female leads while still having weaknesses to overcome. If you love the supernatural world of werewolves, then you will love this book. Hopefully as much as I do.

Gotta give it 4/5 stars.
It wasn’t my normal favourite go to genre. I was wrong. This book is great.

It follows Kestrel, the daughter of a general in a vast army that revels in war. She has two choices in life; either join the army like her father, or marry. Neither of which Kestrel is interested in. Then along comes Arin. A slave that, for some unexplained reason, she feels drawn to and buys.

This story has a lot to offer. Danger, secrets, the attraction of two people from different class. I loved reading this book and it always kept me wanting to read ‘just one more page’. If you like books that keep you wondering what will happen next, then this is a book I would recommend.

It’s the first book in the trilogy and personally; I can’t wait to read the next one.

I’m giving this one 4 out of 5 stars.
After escaping from her Fae captors she must chose her path; live on the run, hiding from the Fae (who destroyed her world) or chose the path of coming into her powers.
Set in the 1800’s, it’s filled with magic, adventure, a bit of romance, and a heroine who not only can fight the villains, but has weaknesses as well. But what I love is that it doesn’t stop her from trying to fight for what she wants, what she believes in.

This book grabbed me from the start and I loved every minute of reading it. The only small thing I can pick at with this was that it was a little slow in some parts, which I thought could have had something happened, or maybe a bit more information revealed. Apart from that, everything else was great.

I definitely recommend this if you love a mix of high society and Fae magic thrown together with a bit of steampunk for good measure.

I have to give this one 4.5 stars
If you were able to make that choice between life and death when life without these people seems too hard, would you give up? If I Stay is a heartbreaking story about a young girl who is forced to make this painful decision, when her family is involved in a tragic car accident.

Caught in a vortex between life and death young Mia Hall, played by Chloe Grace Mortez, watches as the events following her family's accident unfold. Watches as the chaos unfolds, the tragedy, the heartbreak, the turmoil. As we watch Mia navigate this painful state in between life and death, we are also treated to flashbacks that give insight into the characters lives and who they each are. A close knit family, the flashbacks show how important Mia's family are to her. How they have shaped her, encouraged her, supported her and loved her, emphasising just how lost Mia will be without her family. Mortez does a wonderful job at portraying the distressing and panic stricken state that young Mia is in, watching as those she loves are ripped away, leaving her with little desire to continue fighting for her own life.

At the outset of the film, we are introduced to Mia's boyfriend Adam and just as the flashbacks give us insight into Mia's family, they also show how the teen's relationship unfolded. Although the flashbacks show their relationship at an impasse, we see the importance that Adam holds in Mia's life. So we watch as the tenuous threads holding Mia to this life are pulled and tested and strained. Is the love that is left enough to keep her here? Or is it just too much to ask of one person to carry on? As I often revisit this film, my favourite scene is the heartbreaking moment that Mia's grandfather tells her that it is okay to let go, that he knows how much pain she would be in if she chose to fight. For me, this scene is the epitome of love. Loving someone and knowing how much pain their loss would cause you, but allowing them the freedom to let go.

With my heart in my throat from the onset of this film, I felt the film was both a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and an acknowledgement of the relationships with our family and friends that bond and strengthen our hold on this world. I thought it was a story that was beautifully and delicately conveyed, mixing heartache with joy, tragedy with happiness. Films that are converted from books are not always able to capture the magic of the book or the essence of the author, but I felt that If I Stay was able to perfectly grasp the many elements of the story. Should you be more of a book enthusiast, you can check out the book version by Gayle Forman. Grab your copy of the book or the film at the Camden Libraries.
Potter franchise. They are such fantastic books to read and I go back to them
every chance I get. That being said, let’s talk The Cursed Child.

The Cursed Child
follows the story of Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy, who form what may be
considered an unlikely friendship, due to their parents being enemies
throughout their own school years at Hogwarts. As they made their way towards
school on the Hogwarts Express, Albus learns his father has found a Time
Turner. Knowing his father has already refused to help Amos Diggory – who only
wants his son Cedric back from the dead – Albus convinces Scorpius to help him
steal the Time Turner and go back to Harry, Ron and Hermione’s fourth year at
Hogwarts. He is determined to save Cedric during the Triwizard Tournament. The
adventure through begins.

The Cursed Child
has a lot going for it. New and interesting characters, seeing what may have
been, and of course let’s not forget revisiting Hogwarts and the Tournament.
Only this time, we see it through the eyes of someone who doesn’t really want
to be there. The characters are incredibly well written and go a long way
towards carrying the plot through to the end. I especially love how Albus
actually did end up in Slytherin.

It also has a few points which made me think twice about
this book. For one thing, it was difficult to get into because it is in script
form. The characters we know and love aren’t the same as when we left them at
the end of Death Hallows. They’ve changed and although you expect them to
change slightly because of the time difference in between books, the differences
are a little too hard to ignore. The ‘scenes’ jump from time period to time
period and the changes can be hard to follow when you try to read this like you
would read a normal book. It’s also a little too obvious who the Cursed Child
is and the unfolding story gets a little repetitive until it reaches Part 2. Or
maybe that’s because I’m reading the script and not watching the play. I don’t
know for sure but I am absolutely going to see this play if/when it comes to
Sydney.

All being said, Harry
Potter and the Cursed Child is a good book to read if you’re a true Harry
Potter fan. And even if you aren’t, I’d say give it a go and see what you
think. I’m giving this book 3 out of 5 stars because as much as I loved it and
want to rate it higher, I can’t bring myself to do it.

emotion and twists, (almost guaranteed to keep you on your toes) tells the
story of a young woman whose life is far from perfect. Each morning she travels
on the same train to the same destination, each day with a different story to
tell. Life seemed almost uniformed; catch the train to a job she didn’t have,
spend the day walking until the train arrived to take her to her friend’s
apartment where she lived. Nights would be spent drinking away her loneliness,
only to find her sober self facing the same thoughts the next morning. The only
thing that kept her from going over the edge was the couple who lived in the
house her train stopped near. The house and the couple reminded her of how
perfect her life was before her husband divorced her and before her life fell
into ruins. Each day she’d fantasize about the adventures the young couple
would have and about what kind of life they led. She liked this and she felt a
sense of clarity dreaming about this… until it became real.

The Girl on the Train teaches many lessons and reveals
ideas that are only found in the deepest crevices of our mind. This book makes
us feel what she feels and see what she sees, making us view the world in an
entirely different way. Hawkins shows us that there’s a story behind every face
and every scene and that life is never what it seems. Do yourself a favor and reserve a copy at one of the Camden Libraries today.

A Thousand Pieces of You - Claudia Gray

Sitting on a near empty train, travelling through the Bavarian Alps, Germany and reading Claudia Gray's A Thousand Pieces of You, I truly was transported to another dimension. Immersed in the notion of alternate universes and feeling as though I were living in one, provided an amazing symmetry between my own life and Gray's story world.

When we travel, we have the opportunity to explore a side of ourselves that is not always present when we are living our daily lives. I for one struggle to exercise spontaneity and am often pulled back by my inhibitions. Not when I travel though. When I travel solo, I get to see a different side of myself and it is for this reason that A Thousand Pieces of You and the main character, Marguerite, resonated with me so fully. The exploration of different selves and questioning self identity is ever present in the inner musings of Marguerite.

Who could I have been? Was there a different way my life could have played out? What if I had gone right instead of left, where would I be now? These are all questions we are plagued with when reading Gray's novel, where inner reflection is unavoidable. As we follow Marguerite, we watch as she is given the opportunity to play out these different lives. The story is centered around Marguerite's quest to catch her Father's killer, by travelling from dimension to dimension with the aid of her parent's ingenious invention the 'Firebird'. A device that allows a person to explore different universes.

I loved the concept of being able to explore a different version of myself, but will we always like what we see? A certain level of balance must be at play when negotiating these different universes and it would be understandable that if different versions of ourselves exist, we may not always be happy with the person we see in each reality.

Sometimes these conceptual novels can struggle to keep the reader engrossed in the reality of the story, but Gray kept me captivated and guessing (in a good way!) from beginning to end. Gray has perfectly encapsulated the curiosity of humanity and our propensity for continual self reflection in this dimension-bending novel. I definitely encourage you to grab yourself a copy from one of the Camden Libraries today!

Talon by Julie
Kagawa is based on the life of a 16 year old less than normal girl, Ember.
Ember and her brother Dante are dragons (I know! *gasp*), able to change from a
fiery, red, scaled, fire-breathing lizard into regular teens, blending into
human society. Previously Ember and Dante had lived and grown up in a secret
facility hidden in the desert. At the age of 16, the world-wide-dragon
organization Talon sends the pair to infiltrate human teen groups in
preparation for their future work as part of Talon. This is where the story
really heats up!

Just as you’re trying to wrap your head around the idea of
hidden dragons in the world, the perspective changes and we are introduced to
life on the other side of the dragons. Garret, a regular human, is a specially
trained agent part of the secret military of St George. As you can probably
tell from the name, the order of St George trains humans in the ways to fight
and kill dragons; their mortal enemies. Raised to believe all dragons are evil
soulless lizards Garret has no problem in being sent undercover to find evidence
of the sleeper dragons, Ember and Dante, and kill them. What he didn’t count on
was that despite all clues seemingly pointing to Ember as the sleeper dragon,
Garret has difficulty labelling this fiery, beautiful, joyful girl as a
soulless dragon. The confusion, questions, anger, joys and loves of the
characters makes you thirst for more. Talon
makes you turn the pages with barely concealed excitement as you hungrily devour
the pages as views and perspectives change and morph, leaving you to question
whose side you are on. Secrets kept,
secrets revealed and a forbidden romance, Julie Kagawa makes sure there is
never a dull moment. By the end of the book you’ll be frantic for the sequel!

While most attention is given to her Mortal Instruments series, following the tumultuous lives of Clary Fray and her colorful friends, it is Clare's sequential series The Dark Artifices that has left me despairing as I eagerly await the next book. Having already fallen in love with Clare's fictional world, I waited on bated breath for the first book in the series, Lady Midnight, to see where she would go next.

We are given the opportunity to meet the main protagonists of this new series in the Mortal Instruments books, where Clare gave us a peek into their own world of hardship, loyalty and love and the importance of family and friends. Enter Emma Carstairs, of which the series primarily revolves around, a fierce, talented, young Shadowhunter, desperately searching for answers in a world that isn't willing to give them. Finding herself an orphan after the mysterious death of her parents, Emma is sent to live with the Blackthorns, a family that is no stranger to pain and loss. The story inevitably revolves around Emma and the Blackthorn children and their often dangerous escapades, as they work to solve the mysteries that plague their world.

But what would a young adult, paranormal, fictional series be without a little angst and whole lot of forbidden love? The Dark Artifices doesn't disappoint. There is no Emma without Julian Blackthorn. Completely inseparable from the moment they met, Emma and Julian's sweet bond takes center stage in this series. But their bond as parabatai (a term for an almost unbreakable, platonic bond, between two shadowhunter warriors) interferes with the budding feelings developing between the pair. A romantic relationship between a pair of parabatai is strictly prohibited, according to shadowhunter law, but the laws of attraction have other plans. It's hard enough to traverse the steep and rocky terrain of relationships in the real world, but throw in the mix being a shadowhunter, governed by a strict set of laws, it seems entirely impossible. But hey, it makes for a great story!

If you love a fictional world with plenty of rebellion, a whole lot of sword fighting, a good dose of mystery solving and a tonne of romantic suspense, then Cassandra Clare has just the world for you. If you're already familiar with her Mortal Instruments series, then definitely check The Dark Artifices out. However, if you want to jump straight into this mystical world, then go right ahead, this series needs no introduction. Check these titles out at one of your Camden Libraries now and immerse yourself into a series that will always leave you wanting more.

For the last 3 months it has been at the top of a few different youth reading lists, and the author books are sometimes the only one to be seen. Great job Sarah J. Maas! So I decided to see what all the fuss was about. From just reading the blurb I gather that the story is about a young 18 year-old female assassin, ‘Best of her kind’, but unfortunately it doesn’t look that way to begin with, as she has been caught by what seem to be the equivalent to the royal guard. She is offered an ultimatum, freedom in return for sacrifice! Dun Dun Dunn *insert sound effect here*. Celaena, our assassin has to enter a to-the-death tournament (does this sound familiar?).

Our story starts with a proposal from the Prince, which Celaena agrees to (for living purposes), which seems like a good idea. She will compete to become the dreadful King’s champion much to her distaste.

It is interesting to see how Celaena interacts with all 23 champions during each task, especially the dreaded Cain. Notable mention must be given to Prince Dorian and his best friend Chaol, the Captain of the Guard- how the books swoon for these characters!
There appears to be a single romantic interest and a friendship that looks promising. I suppose we will see in the next book (stay tuned for this review!). Whilst you will need to deal with some of the classic clumsiness of the main protagonist, her skills as an assassin are infamous. But most importantly, how could I have forgotten to mention?! No Vampires! Woo!

Noteworthy good things:

- There is a map. Maps in books are great you can see how the author envisions the world. I love Maps!
- The characters actually have interest/hobbies. Woo character development!
- The character is said to be beautiful and acknowledges it in a modest way without being poo about it. For example, she can actually take a compliment.
- For the most part the female characters are strong in body and mind, from working hard not just by chance which is a nice change as well.

So overall a decent book worthy of 7 out of 10 non-lethal weapons!
Steinbeck’s famous classic, <i style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Of Mice and

California, United States. It follows the story of George Milton and Lennie
Small, two migrant ranch workers travelling from place to place to earn their
living, burdened by the childlike nature of Lennie, who inadvertently creates
trouble wherever they go.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">John
Steinbeck is a well-known author of the early 1900’s, with many of his works
becoming widely read classics, that continue to be celebrated in this day and
age. His novel, <i style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Of Mice and Men<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">, is a
touching story that focuses on life within the Great Depression, with insight
into the further inequalities of racism, the role of women and the
understanding and treatment of the mentally disabled that are highly relevant
to the context of the novel. Through a range of characters Steinbeck creates a
confronting statement on the nature of society and its structure during the era
of the Great Depression, elaborately intertwining the numerous aspects of
civilization within the confined boundaries of a ranch. His focus on the
difficulties surrounding the financial wellbeing of many working-class people
within the era becomes a trigger for sentiment within the audience as the themes
of friendship, struggle and hope create sympathy and an emotional attachment
towards the characters of the novel.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";">I found
myself emotionally spent after reading Steinbeck’s sensational story through
his detailed establishment of the protagonists, George and Lennie, and the
interactions between the two. The patient and quick-witted George leads the
audience to feel immediately attached to his caring and protective nature
towards Lennie, and the hope that he creates for them through his dreams of
creating a better life in a time where money is sparse. Lennie himself, who
whilst mentally disabled yet physically strong, is an intriguing character that
I felt to be unique and enthralling. His light hearted nature makes the
audience immediately attuned to his presence, feeling both attached and
concerned over his wellbeing and actions. Steinbeck creates a highly heart
wrenching novel through his build-up of the realities of life with the Great
Depression, exposing the nature of views and the position of people within the
constructs of society, outlining the common presence of hope residing in the
minds of many however becoming nothing more than a dream to most.

The series explores the stories and myths of Greek mythology, bringing to life the creatures and monsters of Ancient Greek beliefs, in a modern day American setting.

Within the first chapter of the first novel of the series, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, I was hooked. Riordan employs entertaining and loveable characters who create a diverse range of personalities within the setting of the books. The integration of the mythological creatures is well planned and keeps the reader on their toes, entertained by the abnormality and craziness of each of the different legends of the myths. The intensive research behind the novel is evident through Riordan’s realist portrayal of the characters of Greek myths. He goes in depth into the world of Greek mythology, creating his own twists within the story with his own creative touch. From the dark Underworld, to the extravagant Olympus the creativity and detailed portrayal of the mythological places is intriguing.

Each of the novels within the series complements each other, building the mythological world further and further. The end result is an exciting and enjoyable pentalogy that keeps you turning each page, unable to put the book down. I highly recommend the Percy Jackson series to any young adult readers, fans of the fantasy world.
Burdened over the death of his uncle from two years earlier, having dropped out of his university degree and only recently having been kicked out of his flatmates apartment Tom is forced to reconnect with family and friends who he had worked to ignore over the years since his uncles death and slowly tries to pick up the broken pieces of not only himself but those of his entire family.
The depth within the background of Tom’s family creates a connection between the reader and each and every intricately detailed personality of the Marchetta’s novel. I personally found the characters extremely realistic through the nature of their interactions and the diversity between them. When characters were upset, I found myself feeling upset, when characters were angry, I was angry and when characters were happy, I was happy. Each emotion and action expressed through the pages of the story is explicitly conveyed, causing the reader to remain absorbed within the novel, feeling emotionally drained through the sentimentality of Marchetta’s writing.

The Australian setting of the novel, within the suburbs of Sydney focussed on a working class family, with an involvement in the Australian Worker’s Union and a love for the NRL holds a refreshing yet familiar environment that Marchetta utilises to convey the nature of Australian life during the early 2000’s. It is stirring to watch unfold the deep connections between family and friends thoroughly conveyed through Marchetta’s writing. She expresses emotion from a third person perspective and works to show the nature of characters and settings through showing the reader rather than telling, expressing personalities through actions and the memories of the protagonist, Tom Mackee, who often reminisces of times before he found himself in a predicament from which he struggled to escape.

Melina Marchetta’s writing is enthralling and the nature of her novel, The Piper’s Son, creates a basis upon which a story of struggle, sorrow and love emerges. It is a heart-warming novel that I highly recommend to young adult and adult readers, one that will leave you crying and laughing, both at the same time.
